Factors to Consider When Buying a Hot Water Heater for a Large Family

Cold showers can be unpleasant and traumatizing sometimes and is not an experience you would want to endure again. However, without a reliable and quality water heater, you and your family will have to welcome the chill with open arms.

You might also want to upgrade or replace your current heating system. The market is flooded with new styles and models, and therefore, for an efficient system, here are some factors you would like to consider before making any purchase.

Let’s delve in:

a. Energy Source

To enjoy hot water in your home, you’ll need an energy source to heat the water. Since we don’t have the same fuel options depending on where you live, you can rule out some of them right away and consider others.

Electricity is readily available and works with conventional tank-type designs, plus on-demand tankless heaters and other options. Natural gas and propane works with a variety of hybrid water heaters and comes in handy during a prolonged power outage.

Therefore, decide between gas and electric water heaters depending on which is suitable for you.

b. Water Heater Types

Water heaters vary in types, such as storage water heaters, also known as tank water heaters, and tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand water heaters.

1. Tank Water Heaters

Here, you might like to look out for the cost, efficiency, and ease of installing tank water heater types. Since the water is heated and kept warm by either electric heating elements or a burner fueled by natural gas or propane, consider a water system with high insulation materials. They should be cheaper and have a more straightforward installation compared to tankless water heaters.

2. Tankless Water Heaters

These heaters provide hot water on demand by heating water as it travels through the unit, utilizing electricity or a gas burner. Because you’re only heating the water you need, significant savings in energy use are possible. So, consider the demand if you have a large family; you might want to install multiple units in parallel. Also, their lifespan should be longer, although the cost might be a bit higher.

c. The System’s Safety Precautions

Ensure to look out for the protection measures that the water heater manufacturer has taken into account. This is more crucial for electric heaters. The elements and thermostats should be made of the right material and the electricity line separated from the waterline. Consider getting a heater that is UL safety approved to avoid scalding incidents. This way, you will have peace of mind knowing you are safe using it.

d. Water Flow Rate

Read the manufacturer’s guide keenly to ensure the heater you intend to buy doesn’t reduce your incoming water flow level. Buy a hot water heater that is compatible with your already existing plumbing works, as this will ensure a consistent hot water supply from your new water heater.

e. Installation and Maintenance

Consider a water heater that is easy to install and maintain. Hiring a professional plumber to install your system might be expensive, so opt for the do-it-yourself heater. Opt for water heaters with a warranty offered since you wouldn’t want to keep incurring costs for replacements or repairs.

Ensure to check out the hot water heater with a warranty offered, as it will assure you of its functionality.

f. Space and Size

If you’re considering going with a storage/tank-type water heater, one of the key considerations will be the tank’s size. Tankless water heaters usually occupy a small space since they are wall or floor-mounted. Therefore, evaluate the space you have to accommodate the water heater.

Follow the aforementioned tips, do thorough research on what you want, make your purchase, and enjoy your hot water!

 Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the best water heater for a large family?

TOP PICK: Rinnai RUC98iN Tankless Water Heater. With its high 9.8 gallons-per-minute (GPM) flow rate, it’s perfect for families.

2. How big of a hot water heater do I need for a family of 4?

A family of 3 to 4 people should purchase a 50-60 gallon water heater. On the other hand, a household with 5 – 7 people may require a water heater with a 60-80 gallon water tank.

3. What size hot water heater do I need for a family of 5?

3 to 4 people, you’ll need at least a 50-gallon capacity tank (electric) or a 40-gallon capacity tank (natural gas or liquid propane). If your family size is 5 or more, you’ll need an 80-gallon tank (electric) or a 50-gallon tank (natural gas or liquid propane).

4. Is A.O Smith better than Rheem?

Both A.O Smith and Rheem are great names in the water heater industry. Rheem has a better overall product offering with a higher reach in the industry. But AO Smith is known to have a better customer experience. Regardless of what type of water heater you choose, both options will provide you with excellent longevity.

5. What is the largest residential hot water heater?

The Westinghouse 60 Gallon water heater is one of the largest tanks available on the market today.

6. What water heaters do plumbers recommend?

If you have a relatively low GPM (under 5 GPM), a gas tankless water heater or heat pump water heater could work well for you. Both gas tankless water heater and heat pump water heaters work well for households who don’t have a high demand for hot water at any given time.

7. Can a tankless water heater fill a tub?

A tankless water bath can fill the water bath with hot water. However, you must ensure that the bathtub flow rate matches the water heater’s rate. If your bathtub has a high flow rate, you will need a high heating capacity to meet the need. A tankless water heater can provide a continuous supply of hot water.

8. Is there a big difference between a 40-gallon and 50-gallon water heater?

The cycling losses measure how much heat is lost as the water circulates through the system. Combined, these losses make up the water heater’s energy factor (EF). With the energy factors being equal, the difference in cost of running a 50-gallon heater over a 40-gallon heater is essentially insignificant.

9. How long do Rheem water heaters last?

These Rheem water heaters come with a 6-year warranty on parts and the tank plus a 1-year labor warranty. The 6-year warranty does not mean the unit will only last that long: your water heater, if properly maintained, should have a lifespan of at least 8 years.

10. How many showers can you get out of a 50-gallon water heater?

A 50-gallon water heater is the most common tank we install. It is such a common size because it can supply hot water for 3 – 5 people. Considering an average shower uses 17.2 gallons of water, you can typically have enough hot water for up to five people to take a shower within an hour.
